There is a growing controversy that there are too many web sites in existence for Search Engine Optimization to matter. But no one really knows for sure and still others that swear by using it for their marketing. This article explores some of the issues surrounding Search Engine Optimization and whether it is something you should consider.
Search Engine Optimization is the art of using the correct keywords, content, and links such that your page/site comes up on the first few pages when someone uses a search engine like Google to do a web search. Most people that have been involved with internet marketing will suggest that it still does matter. But a growing number of people are really starting to wonder if it has any impact at all.
Many guru guides will tell you to not concentrate on keywords that are commonplace. These are usually one- or two-word phrases. They'll tell you that these are diffiult to rank for within the search engine. I totally agree with this that it is almost impossible to use any kind of Search Engine Optimization techniques that are likely to be effective with these kinds of keywords.
Those same set of gurus will tell you to use what is known as long-tail keywords. These are keywords that consist of three or more words and tend to be very specific about the phrase. Usually you would start with a commonplace word like "car" and the expand that out to much greater detail. So the base word car could be expanded to "buy a red corvette".
So is this technique effective. Again, this is where the controversy lies. I think that you will rank well for a long-tail keyword but is anyone really going to search for that? You must do some research and see if the phrase has enough searches in Google to make it worthwhile. You can do that by taking the phrases, wrapping it in quotes and then searching for it in Google. The number of results that come back can give you a good indication if people are actually searching for the phrase.
It is truly unclear whether Search Engine Optimization is effective anymore or not. If you decide to utilize it, make sure that you don't overuse it within an article. Secondly, really try to make it sound natural and easy to read. I once read that you should write for your audience and not the search engines. While the true answer is you should write for both, you do want to add value to your readers. So read back the article and make sure it doesn't sound to keyword spammy. I think it is probably wise to incorporate it as if it does still matter, your pages will be properly optimized.
